Hey guys! Some of you know that I recently moved into a new apartment, and if you didn’t know be sure to follow me on Instagram (@caitlinmcgill_) for my most recent life updates! Before moving into my new apartment, I lived with 3 other college roommates. I graduated college last year in May, and it was totally time for a change. I was excited to get my new apartment because I knew I could finally design a space how I wanted it. I absolutely love interior design! I mean what woman doesn’t?! For this blog post, I wanted to share with you guys my personal style guide as well as some tips on how to decorate your own home space. This is my first interior design blog post, so I hope you guys like it!
Inspiration Behind My Home Design
First things first, my biggest advice for designing your space is to BE YOURSELF. So many people get caught up in other people’s designs that they forget to make it their own. Pinterest and other social media platforms are great tools for inspiration, but just remember to be you & do what makes you happy.
Choose a Style & Color Scheme
I have always loved the modern boho style when it comes to interior design, so I knew that was the route I wanted to take for the style of my apartment. Once I figured out the style I was going for, I chose a color scheme. My apartment has mostly cool tones throughout its floorplan. The kitchen has white cabinets, black appliances, and the kitchen & bathroom granite countertops are a cool toned blend of white, gray, and black. The walls are also a light gray color. Staying consistent with the cool-toned color scheme only made sense to me, so I decided to stick with white, black, and gray for the main colors.
Also, don’t forget to think about what accents you would like to add to your color scheme. I did choose a cool-toned color scheme, but I knew I wanted to add a little something something to jazz it up a bit so it wouldn’t be so blah. I decided to go with adding wooden accents and lots of faux plants. Notice I said “faux plants”. I will kill a real plant in a heartbeat, so that was a no-go lol.
Create a Style Guide
When I’m trying to find inspiration for anything, I always look to Pinterest for ideas. Pinterest is full of ideas and inspirational content that can be used as style guides when you’re designing your own space. But like I mentioned earlier, BE YOURSELF. Since I had chosen a modern boho style for my home, I just searched “modern boho interior design”. This helped me gather an overview of how I wanted each room designed and set up: living room, bedroom, and office space. Within this search, there were a lot of all white designs as well as tribal prints. However, I knew I wanted a little more color and something simpler. So I just took the designs that I really liked and tried to incorporate my color scheme and furniture pieces.
I even like to go as far as creating a collage of all of my inspirational content similar to the one that I created for the cover photo of this blog post. Or you could just create a Pinterest board to keep all of your home design content.
The key to buying furniture is to know that good things take time so have patience. And do it right the first time – you’ll be much happier in the long run and won’t end up wanting to redo it later! What I mean by this is when you’re in the store shopping for furniture, don’t just buy something because you have a need for it and you think it’s cute. Be sure to focus on the style guide that you created for your design process. Ask yourself these questions.
1. Does it match my color scheme?
2. Is it consistent with my style guide?
3. Does it coordinate with other pieces that I have bought already?
4. Do I really have a place for this?
5. Will I regret it and think about it for a lifetime if I walk away without buying?
I always ask myself these questions when making a big purchase like a sofa, bed, table, etc. For smaller pieces like a vase or faux plant, it is okay to make impulsive purchases. However, be sure to still ask yourself the questions above that way you don’t have a house full of stuff that makes you look like a hoarder.
I loved sharing my home style with you! If you take anything away from this blog post just always remember to be yourself and ask yourself those 5 questions before making a big purchase. I have included a few inspirational photos below from my Pinterest account that helped me with designing my home! Check them out. I hope they can help you with your home designing journey :)
