How to Choose Your Next Fragrance + Layering Scents

Have you ever wondered how you can shop for fragrances online without knowing what they smell like? I’m here to show you how you can go about choosing your next fragrance by figuring out what frangrance families you like as well as studying scent profiles and how to layer fragrances. Keep reading down below to learn more.

Fragrance Families

First things first, let’s talk about fragrance families, scent profiles and fragrance strengths.

To make it easier for us all to discover our favourite scents and find your perfect perfume, fragrances are classified into four different olfactory groups, otherwise known as fragrance families: oriental, floral, fresh and woody.

All perfumes have a scent profile which make up their top, middle & bottom notes. The top note will attract your attention first because it is the scent that is instantly distinctive when the perfume is sprayed. However, the top note is the quickest to fade. As the top note wears off, eventually you’ll begin to smell the middle notes. The middle note is often times referred to as the “heart” of the fragrance since it brings the top & bottom notes together. Although, the body of the fragrance are in the bottom notes. The bottom notes are going to stick around the longest.

Another thing that you want to pay attention to when shopping for perfumes, is the fragrance strength. There are some fragrances that last longer than others. Perfume oil concentrate are the strongest type of perfume being 100% perfume oil. Eau de Parfum (EDP) is the second strongest type of perfume containing between 10-20% of perfume oil and will generally last around 8 hours. Eau de Toilette (EDT) is next, containing around 5-15% of perfume oil. EDT fragrances often have a quick burst of beautiful smells before fading; meaning they can make a great first impression. Generally, these fragrances will last somewhere between 4 and 7 hours.

How to Choose Your Next Fragrance

Now that we’ve discussed scent profiles and fragrance strengths, I want you to do a little research. Look up your top 3 favorite fragrances and figure out which fragrance families they fall into and what particular notes make up the scent profiles. Taking note of your favorite frangrance families and scent profiles will help you when you’re shopping for your next fragrance, especially online. For instance, I’ve learned my top fragrance families are fresh, woody, and oriental with citrus, vanilla & woody notes making up my favorite scent profiles. If you happen to come across a fragrance that you like in store, then wait a full 2-4 hours before buying. That way you will have time to experience each top, middle & bottom note to see if you really like the fragrance or not.

My Favorite Fragrances

I don’t know about you, but I am a gourmand girlie when it comes to fragrances. I love sweet scents. I like to say I want to smell like something that can be eaten, especially at night. During the day, I dabble into more citrus base fragrances because I like to smell fresh. Here recently, I’ve started layering my fragrances, and it was the best decision I ever made. A good perfume oil and a parfum will change your fragrance life.

  1. Billie Eilish Eilish Eau de Parfum + Maison Margiela’s Replica By The Fireplace

I love this fragrance combo because it simultaneously gives off masculine and feminine vibes with the sweet & smokey scent. Furthermore, these fragrances compliment each other well since they both contain majority spicey, woodsy and sweet notes. Layering these two provides “By The Fireplace” more frangrance strength since it is only an EDT while “Eilish” is a EDP.

Billie Eilish “Eilish” Eau de Parfum is a captivating Amber Gourmand fragrance that attracts you with a warm, magnetic, sensual scent

Maison Margiela Replica “By The Fireplace” Eau de Toilette is a warm & spicey fragrance that gives off the enveloping sensation of a fireplace crackling with the flames of a comforting fire.

2. Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold Edition + Sage Lifestyle “Diamond” Perfume Oil Concentrate

This is another favorite fragrance combo that I am absolutely loving right now. Al Haramain “Amber Oud” Gold Edition is a sweet & floral fragrance. I’m not a floral girlie, so the floral can be a little over-powering for me on it’s own. I combine it with Safe Lifestyle’s “Diamond” perfume oil oncentrate which a soft & warm fragrance.

Al Haramain “Amber Oud” Gold Edition Eau de Parfum is an opulent fragrance that combines the timeless allure of amber with the rare depth of Oud.
